Great Shepherd of the Sheep
"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5).
Our Heavenly Father is often described in scripture as the Shepherd of His flock. The 23rd Psalm speaks of Him as our Provider, Protector, Comforter and Leader. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, Who gives His life for the sheep.
To Pastors, the apostle Paul said: "Tend the flock of God that is your charge, not by constraint, but willingly; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not as domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock" (1 Peter 5:2-3). So it is the will of God for every Christian to follow the Great Shepherd of the Sheep, and it is His imperative command that every earthly shepherd lovingly tend his flock.
"Now the God of Peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that Great Shepherd of the Sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to Whom be glory forever and ever. Amen" (Hebrews 13:20-21).
