I
Am Alpha
The Alpha window is the first of three which portray the beginning of history, the center of history, and the end of history. The theme is taken from the words of Jesus first spoken in Revelation 1:8: "I Am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, saith the Lord, which is, and was, and is to come, the Almighty."
Alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, is used here as a symbol
of creation. The first chapter of Genesis describes the separation
of light from darkness, the appearance of the sun, moon and stars and the
division of the seas from the land.
The role of Jesus in creation is described again in the gospel of John:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God, in Him was life, and the life was the light of men."
The Alpha window reminds us that Jesus is the Lord of our beginnings. He is there when we are born, as we mature, when we choose a career, and when we marry. We are always in the hands of the eternal One.
This window was given in
memory of Melvin Francis.
