Coffee Buzz: week 18 (Updated Friday, July 3, 2008)

We have begun to think about ministries that our class could take the lead on, develop, and help to implement. Before bible study on Sunday we discussed some possibilities, but are still considering and searching. While our class has taken on a new format and while we are engaged in some exciting things, it is important that we actively engage in serving others in Jesus’ name, and meeting needs. Please make a mental note (or write it down) if you have an idea or two about some areas of ministry that our class could possibly lead out in, and we will discuss these ideas before bible study or at another meeting.

Well, summer is slipping passed us at an alarming rate, and we really haven’t planned any more get-togethers. We need to do something, soon. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or big; because our group is so entertaining, we can have fun at the simplest of gatherings. Therefore, everyone put your thinking caps (or planning caps) on and let’s talk about it on Sunday.

Let the word of Christ dwell within you richly…as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your heart to God. (reference: Colossians 3:16)
John’s gospel is not the only book with a really neat “3:16”. There is something about a song that can lift a person’s spirit when literally nothing else can. Under the inspiration of God, Paul wrote these words to the church at Colossae. He wrote similar words in his circular letter, Ephesians. Both were written as Paul neared the end of his life, and both were written during his next to last Roman imprisonment. Paul also is recorded as having sung a duet with Silas in the jail at Phillipi. One can’t help but think that in the midst of trouble, trial, or despair, Paul lifted his voice in song to God; and it lifted him. We don’t know what Paul’s voice was like, but he understood the value in raising a song of praise to God, regardless. I’m no Paul, but God has again and again lifted my spirits as, not knowing what else to do, I’ve just belted out “I am Thine Oh Lord”, or “Because He Lives”, or “What A Friend”. Singing Christian songs; it pleases God, and does the singer a world of good. Try it!

You all have a great week!    Ben
